barista

I worked as a barista to make ends meet in college.(我大學的時候當咖啡店員來維持生計。)

Who hasn’t dreamed about being a barista before?(誰以前沒有想過要成為咖啡店員?)

● What would you like?

最常見的其中之一就是 What would you like? 後面可以加上 to eat 或是 to drink,變成:

What would you like to eat?

What would you like to drink?(你想喝什麼?)

What do you like to eat? What do you like to eat

那如果是 What would you like?

What can I get for you?

那回答的話,除了用 I would like… 以外,還可以用 I’ll have…我要…」,或是 Can I get…?

Can I get a grande latte, please?(我想要一杯大杯拿鐵,謝謝。)

I would like a venti mocha latte, please.(我要一杯特大杯摩卡拿鐵,謝謝。)

I would like an iced hazelnut latte with oat milk, easy on the ice.(我要一杯冰的榛果拿鐵換燕麥奶,少冰。)

I’ll have a decaf latte with nonfat milk, please.(我要一杯無咖啡因拿鐵加脫脂牛奶,謝謝。)

Designed by Freepik

Vt Pmkn Latte
= Venti Pumpkin Latte(特大杯南瓜那堤)

eight shots of espresso

one pump of maple pecan sauce

seven pumps of pumpkin sauce

almond drink

Extra hot
Hot 熱的
No ice 去冰
Light iced 少冰
Iced

Five Things Starbucks Won’t Tell You

Five Things Starbucks Won’t Tell You

[youtubelearn video_code="sG9Jo3plhPA" srt_name="starbuckssecrets" player_length=""]

So we all know Starbucks, with their ventis, and their grandes, and their Pumpkin Spice Lattes, but here are a few things we don’t know about America’s favorite place to go for coffee.

The first thing—a surprising number of people don’t love Starbucks’s coffee. There’s probably a reason why Starbucks has earned the nickname “Charbucks." Critics say that a lot of their coffee has an overly roasted quality, a real, kind of, dark and bitter taste. What’s really interesting is that a San Francisco web publisher, The Bold Italic, did a survey of six packaged coffees. Starbucks came in dead last (sixth out of the six)! Even Folgers, a fairly mundane supermarket brand, beat it out. Of course, Starbucks says, “Different tastes for different folks." They now do have quite a wide range of coffees. They say if you don’t like something dark, go with a lighter roast, which they call their Blonde Roast.

The next thing Starbucks won’t tell you: There are a lot of chemicals in its coffee. This issue has come up recently because a blogger called the Food Babe has taken a hard look at the Pumpkin Spice Latte. She finds a lot of things she doesn’t like in it, particularly caramel coloring, which is a known carcinogen—or at least one of the chemical by-products of caramel coloring is a known carcinogen. Starbucks says that they are taking a look at the caramel color issue and they will consider removing it from their coffees. They do say, however, their coffees are perfectly safe to consume. Starbucks also says that there are pumpkin spices in their Pumpkin Spice Latte, but guess what? No actual pumpkin.

Here’s another thing Starbucks won’t tell you: They’ve got a secret menu. Yes, of course, Starbucks has a very long list of drinks you can order, but there are a surprising number of ones that you can essentially create by having them mix different syrups and different things on their menu. For example, there’s something called a Fruity Pebbles Frappuccino. It’s a sort of hyped-up version of a strawberry Frappuccino, but they say it tastes like the namesake cereal.

And let’s talk about nutrition, as in calorie counts. Yes, it’s another thing that Starbucks really doesn’t like to talk about. That’s because if you order certain Frappuccinos, you’re looking at, easily, 400 calories, even up to 500 calories in some instances, it looks like. Plus, if you add in a snack, like one of those pound cakes or coffee cakes or different things like that, your total calories could come out to be almost a thousand calories. Keep in mind, we’re talking about a “coffee and a snack"—a thousand calories. It’s something that nutritionists say is just asking for trouble.

Finally, here’s something to think about. Now, Starbucks will tell you they sell their products for home use, but if you really want to save money on their coffee, just do it in a very basic way: Buy yourself a good machine; buy yourself a good burr grinder. You can make, essentially, coffee for as little as a thousand a year. We’re talking Starbucks-quality coffee. And guess what? You get to keep the brewer and the grinder for long-time use.

Hi! I’m Michelle. I’ve been a partner for a year and a half. And we’re here to share some pro tips with you guys and…just some of the things that we have, um, asked of us from the customers here in the store on a regular basis.

What is a ristretto shot?

The difference between a regular shot and a ristretto shot is just that less water is pulled through the espresso, creating a sweeter shot.

What is a latte?

We also get asked “What is a latte?" It’s basically espresso shots, steamed milk, with velvety foam on top. And that is my go-to drink.

What’s the difference between a latte and a cappuccino?

One of the questions that we get asked a lot is “What’s the difference between a latte and a cappuccino?" We start with our espresso shots, steam our milk, and the only difference really is the amount of foam on top. So, a cappuccino has quite a bit more foam than the latte.

What’s the difference between coffee and espresso?

I always tell my customers that, really, espresso is coffee. It’s just a different preparation. They use high pressure from steam to press the water through the coffee grounds to get the liquid. With coffee, you’re just pouring hot water over the grounds and whatever,
using gravity to get that liquid.

How Does Caffeine Affect the Brain?

[youtubelearn video_code="gmEEZbEkoYg" srt_name="caffeineandthebrain" player_length=""]

Warning: This video was made under the influence of caffeine.

So you get to work after a long commute, and you’re feeling a bit tired. You reach for a coffee, and within seconds, you feel more awake. How is the coffee affecting your brain? Stay tuned to find out.

There’s no doubt about it: Drinking a coffee or any caffeinated drink when you feel tired will make you feel more alert, but let’s take a second to think about what coffee is.

Coffee comes from the coffee plant, which grows in many places, but primarily Brazil, Vietnam, and Colombia. The seeds, also called coffee beans, are packaged and shipped all over the world and are then brewed into your favorite coffee at your local coffee shop. The types of coffee available are endless, but no matter which you drink, they will all make you feel more alert because they contain caffeine. How does caffeine make you more alert? It’s all to do with the neuroscience.

Adenosine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, and so when it binds to receptors in the brain, it reduces nerve activity and makes you sleepy. To the receptors in the brain, caffeine looks just like adenosine, and so it can bind to those receptors too—but it doesn’t reduce nerve activity. It just stops adenosine binding. Therefore, the neurons aren’t inhibited. They just speed up, which stops you feeling sleepy and instead makes you more alert and awake.

So there you have it. The next time you reach for a coffee to give you that buzz, you’ll know how it affects your brain. Just make sure you don’t drink too much as you might end up with a bad case of the caffeine jitters.

Ah…beautiful day. I’d call it perfect. But it’s missing something, don’t you think? Ah! There it is. This morning just wasn’t complete until your first cup of coffee, right? Yeah, there’s nothing quite like a steaming cup full of an addictive drug in the morning. I’m Roger. And I’d love to tell you about Horton brand warm, addictive brown stuff.

Please enjoy this footage of velvety smooth beans, followed by a well-shot close-up of a hot brown liquid that’s brewed by mixing heated water with the roasted, smashed-up seeds of a flowering shrub native to Southern Africa and Tropical Asia. I only showed you that to remind you, you desperately need your fix. How could you forget? You see, these small brown seeds are a naturally occurring source of the world’s most widely consumed central nervous system stimulant—caffeine. While most brain-altering substances are outlawed or at least tightly controlled by the government, this entirely legal psychoactive drug is enjoyed by basically every person you know, on a daily basis, completely unrestricted, and with zero cultural stigma. In fact, it’s openly celebrated by your friends, family, and morning television personalities!

Smells so good. I can’t wait to add flavors and sweetener to distract from the natural flavor of this thing I claim to love and not be addicted to.

I do like it! It’s just that…two sugars and that hazelnut creamer make it—I’m not addicted to…

Junkies like him keep me, a harvester of brown seeds, in business. But not just me—also me, a distributor of overpriced addictive sludge.

It also comes in pumpkin flavored, if you’d prefer that to the wet-cigar, boiled-asphalt flavor that occurs naturally.

I do!

Great! That’ll be 11 dollars and…here’s a cup with your name just butchered on it to prove that you will let literally anyone treat you literally however they want as long as they’re handing you a cup of the chemical reward of an unregulated psychoactive drug. Enjoy your drug disguised as a universally celebrated touchstone of human culture, Randor. Randor? That’s not even a name! I didn’t even try.
Randor?

Now, I understand that you wouldn’t want to associate that chemical reward with the knowledge that people with far less money than you are severely underpaid to grow and harvest these bitter, drug-laden seeds. So I’d like to show you some more footage, this time of a hardworking, happy-looking person in Ethiopia, or Guatemala, somewhere hot—it doesn’t really matter. I’m also going to say some words that, combined with these images, should make you feel better.

Organic.
有機。

Cooperative.

Sustainable.

Ethical…um…ethics.

I could bore you with the details and complexities of the international commodities market, or I could just say, “Hey, look! This burlap bag of beans has ‘Fair Trade’ stamped on it."

That’s good…right?

Sure! Or at any rate, it lets you plausibly deny that your happiness fix relies on somebody else’s misery. Now the only thing that’ll keep you up at night is the central nervous system stimulant you consume on a daily basis via this mix of heated water and roasted, smashed-up seeds.

Why are you doing this? Why are you telling us this?!

You’re really cranky when you haven’t had your coffee, you know that? There you go…a nice warm cup of your personality. Drink it up!

I’m Roger, by the way.

So this morning, I went to Starbucks. You know Starbucks. You’ve heard of Starbucks? Yup. There’s one on the corner next to the Starbucks across from the Starbucks.

Go in there for coffee—should be simple. You go in, you order; they say, “What’s your name?" You tell them your name. A few minutes later, they hand you a coffee that says “Helen." You know.

Should be easy—it’s not. First, there’s a long line. Why is there a line? I mean, there are more Starbucks in the world than there are people. We should all—we should have our individual Starbucks by now.

I think one reason is—the line is so long because there are people don’t know what to order. That’s one of the things. These people, they go every single day, and then they just stare up at the menu. Like seeing it for the first time. It’s the same menu. Nothing’s changed. They have coffee, they have tea, and they have Michael Buble CDs. Choose something!

And then there are the people who know what they want, but they’re…they—it’s so complicated. That’s the problem with it. There’s a woman in front of me, she ordered a…a mocha no-foam extra-whip sugar-free double-shot non-fat vanilla iced Ariana Grande. And…

Then after you place your order, you walk over to the barista station, which is a fancy name for “coffee-pourer person," and— This is a place where people stand as close to the counter as they possibly can, even though there are 12 people waiting for their order that were before them.

And then, after you get your coffee, you have a seat, which—you can’t find a seat. It’s impossible, because I call them “Starbucks Squatters." That’s what they—they order one coffee, and then they sit there…eight to 12 hours. And they bring so much stuff with them. It looks like they’re moving in. They have a newspaper. They have a book, a charger, a laptop, extension cords, a cot…pictures of their family, a personal assistant, a garden hose—I don’t know why.

No one should spend that much time at a Starbucks, which brings me to the dress code. And I’ve mentioned this before, but spandex bike shorts are not acceptable. A. You’re sweaty. B. No one wants to see you dig in there for exact change. There is nothing worse than a warm dollar.

Uh-oh. Did you wanna see more videos? Hold on.

Hey, guys! I’m Lucie Fink. This is “five days of no coffee."

Monday
星期一

I love coffee. I myself started drinking it at about age 15. I drink about two to four cups of coffee every day. But I don’t think that I drink it only for energy. I genuinely enjoy coffee. Coffee is such a huge part of social culture around the world. I mean, think about it, when you go to meet up with a friend that you haven’t seen in a while, where do you go? To get a cup of coffee!

There are so many proven benefits of coffee, but there are also some drawbacks. It can be dehydrating, it can disrupt sleep patterns, caffeine increases your stress hormone, and also, coffee tends to lead to unplanned trips to the bathroom (side note). So, I’m going off of it this week, and we’ll see how my body responds.

I have a garbage can here. I didn’t just pour that on the floor. Gotcha!

I have a really bad headache, and I’ve had it all freaking day. It was almost as if the moment I started thinking this morning, my head started hurting. Happy Monday. Good night.

Tuesday
星期二

Hi. The sun hurts. Twenty-four hours with no coffee… I didn’t think I needed coffee, but let me tell you, I was wrong. Yesterday’s headache was just the tip of the iceberg. Today’s is even worse. Yesterday I felt really disorganized. I had a couple of morning meetings that I just could not pull myself together, and papers were flying around my desk! People would come over to talk to me and I continuously forgot what I was about to say. Blame it on the fact that it was Monday or blame it on the lack of coffee—who knows.

But instead of just giving in and assuming I must be addicted to coffee, I decided to do some research about foods that naturally will energize my body and make me feel more alert and awake. So here’s what I got: some fresh fruit for natural sugar, trail mix, dark chocolate, and in the fridge, I have coconut water and get this…raw sauerkraut. Let’s do this. Ouch…

Wednesday
星期三

I made a mistake this morning. The point of this five days was to give up coffee, which naturally led to me giving up caffeine, considering coffee is my biggest source of caffeine. So I thought I was being so good and I poured myself a cup of tea instead of coffee. You know, I had another cup…and another cup. Later in the day, my co-producer asked me, “What are you drinking?" And I said, “Tea." She looked at me and asked, “Can I see the label for that?" As it turns out—and I’m so ashamed—I was drinking caffeinated black tea.

Since one cup of black tea has half of the caffeine content of a cup of coffee, and I had three cups of tea, I have today had 1.5 cups of coffee’s worth of caffeine. Needless to say, my headaches are gone. If nothing else, this grand mistake of mine has taught me that the headaches and the irritability were from a lack of caffeine. Even still, without the headaches, and even with all the food I’ve been eating to keep my energy levels up, I still want coffee.

Today, I ran out in the rain, and I went to a coffee shop, and I just sat there and inhaled the fumes. Do you see how crazy this week is making me?

Thursday
星期四

My five days of no-coffee challenge has turned into a big, buzzing topic around the R29 office. Everyone’s got a coffee story. This person drinks coffee for two weeks and then goes off of it so that they don’t get addicted. This other person drank so much coffee that she became allergic to it. That is a true story.

My focus this week was to really dive deep and understand my personal relationship with that dark, steaming roast. As we saw, on Monday and Tuesday, I’m kind of addicted to caffeine. To be honest, even though the caffeine got rid of my headaches, caffeine alone doesn’t cut it. That feeling for me of holding a cup of coffee and just inhaling and breathing deeply, taking that first sip—it’s a mind, body, and soul experience. So, I’m not sure that I’m addicted as one would say, but I might be…in love. Interesting.

Friday
星期五

Happy Friday, guys! Wow, what a week! Am I right? Let’s break down how the week went, shall we?

Cons: massive headaches, irritability, and the inability to form sentences. Pros: I was able to get to sleep a little bit easier than I am normally and, potentially, made fewer trips to the bathroom. So, where does that leave me? Clearly, some addictive personality traits that I didn’t even know I had came shining through this week, so I really learned a lot about myself and my addiction. Nothing in my life can really replace a cup of coffee.

Now I wanna know what you could not give up for one entire week. Subscribe to Refinery29 on YouTube for some more challenges like this one. Drop us a line. Let me know what you wanna see me try.
